what is it and why?

James lives with his wife, Sunny, and their five children in Utah. After breaking several Guinness World Records, James wondered if he had truly found his mental and physical limits. He knew there was more: 50 Ironmans, 50 States, 50 consecutive days.

After accomplishing the fifty, James knew he wasn’t done yet. Over the next five years, he rode his mountain bike to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro, ran 235 miles across Greece, competed in Xtreme Triathlons around the world, and raced the Xtri World Championship in Norway. He also competed in the T.V. World Premiere of The World’s Toughest Race – a ten-day adventure race through the back jungles of Fiji, and The Uberman, all leading up to his biggest project––Conquer One Hundred––racing a full-distance triathlon for 100 consecutive days, from March 1, 2021 – June 8, 2021. 140.6 miles a day, for 14 weeks, totally 14, 060 miles.

James is now experiencing being the parent of four teenage girls and one son who is almost a teenager as well. After watching the documentary on Netflix for Operation Underground Railroad, he knew that he wanted to get involved. He contacted O.U.R. and was thrilled to create a partnership to raise money for the cause. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and James is excited to get involved in freeing modern-day slaves, particularly teenagers and children.

GENERAL FAQs

Who is O.U.R.?

Click here to learn more about O.U.R.

Who is O.U.R.'s founder Tim Ballard?

Timothy Ballard is the Founder and C.E.O. of Operation Underground Railroad (O.U.R.). Ballard spent over a decade working as a Special Agent for the Department of Homeland Security, where he was assigned to the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and deployed as an undercover operative for the U.S. Child Sex Tourism Jump Team. He has worked every type of case imaginable in the fight to dismantle child trafficking rings. Ballard has worked undercover in the United States and in multiple foreign countries to infiltrate child trafficking organizations. In this effort, he has successfully dismantled dozens of these organizations and rescued countless children from sex slavery. He is an expert at managing Internet investigations, particularly those dealing with file-share networks where pedophiles and traffickers go to trade in child pornography. He has trained hundreds of law enforcement officers and has testified before the United States Congress on best practices to liberate children from sex slavery.

Ballard has been featured on many national news outlets to discuss his efforts to combat child trafficking. He has appeared on Fox & Friends, Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace, The Meredith Vieira Show, C.B.S. Nightly News, A.B.C. Nightline, and CNN Headline News, MSNBC, The Glenn Beck Program, as well as many local news shows.

Ballard is the best-selling author of “The Covenant: One Nation Under God” and is the author of the sequel to that work, “The Covenant, Lincoln, and The War.” He has taught American and International Politics courses at Imperial Valley College, San Diego State University, and American Heritage School. He has been featured regularly on both local and national T.V. and radio programs to discuss American history and politics and the role America has played in defending liberty at home and abroad. He has often commented on how his academic work in American history has provided him the inspiration and motivation to rescue children–to carry on the American tradition of liberating the captive. He recently received the distinguished George Washington Honor Medal from the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge.

After serving a church mission to Chile, Ballard graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Spanish and Political Science from Brigham Young University. He went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude with an M.A. in International Politics from the Monterey Institute of International Studies. He resides in California with his wife and children.

In April 2019, Tim became a volunteer C.E.O. for Operation Underground Railroad by taking no salary or benefits. This was always his goal when he started the foundation.

What is the purpose of the Conquer 100 project?

The Conquer 100 attempt aims to create a new world standard of human performance and endurance, both physically and mentally. We are doing what is believed impossible; 100 straight iron-distance triathlons.

As well as pushing the limits of human performance, the Conquer 100 attempt aims to promote the work of O.U.R., a not-for-profit organization focused on permanent eradication of child sex trafficking through coordinated rescue and recovery planning.

Can I attend the Conquer 100 as a spectator?

Yes.  The courses are open to the public.  Anyone is welcome to come bike and run on the public roads with James.  The Lindon aquatic center will charge a very nominal fee to swim or to spectate the swimmers.  There is a small grandstand beside the pool area.  There is no fee to participate; however, we would appreciate a donation to O.U.R.

Is there any prize money?

Absolutely not.  All money donated will go directly to the chosen charity.

Can I volunteer?

Yes.  Please follow this link to the volunteer sign-up sheet

Where can I watch it?

Please follow us on Instagram and Facebook.  We will be going live daily on these platforms.

Can I buy Conquer 100 kits and merchandise?

Yes. Official Conquer 100 merchandise is available for purchase later once the project starts. If you want to ride with us in an official jersey, I would plan in advance as print time needs to be considered with the cycling kits.

JAMES LAWRENCE

James is originally From Calgary, Alberta Canada. He grew up a wrestler and later in life became to love endurance racing to escape the hectic routine of Corporate America. After losing everything in 2008, James turned to his new found passion for triathlon racing and went on to break two world records within three years. In 2015 James accomplished the unthinkable despite everyone saying his end goal was impossible. He completed 50 Ironman distance triathlons, in 50 days, in each of the 50 United States — The 50-50-50.

Sunny Jo Mama

The queen of James’ castle.  I am excited about this adventure, removing the chaos and putting James’ mental toughness to the test.  I am emotionally committed and have enjoyed doing some of the ‘behind the scenes’ tasks.  I am hoping to be out in the open, depending on my family’s needs, supporting James in every way possible.  It is crazy and exciting, and we are ready to Conquer 100!

Aaron Hopkinson

I am from Orem, Utah and married to Jill Hopkinson. I love playing any sports, hiking, camping, traveling, and going on cool adventures. I am currently a coach for the Iron Cowboy Racing team and have been racing all distances of triathlon, cycling, and running for 11 years. James coached me when I first started getting into triathlons and we started training together a lot. I was one of the wingmen during the 50/50/50 and will have the same role during the conquer 100. I will also be helping to coach him and will do all the bike rides along with him. I am so excited for this and I was in from the moment James started planning on doing it. I wanted to be part of this because I believe in him and I love helping people achieve their goals and dreams. Being able to witness and help James accomplish this is something I wouldn’t want to miss.

Casey Robles

A little bit about me. . . . I have an amazing wife, I am a father of 4, I love teaching, and I enjoy being open to new opportunities where I can grow and learn.

I met James at local triathlon. After a couple of races we started to train together. Then we started to hang out. Eventually he asked me to help him with the 505050. The rest . . . . is history. For the 100 I will be dusting off the Wingman wings, picking up the speedo from the dry cleaners, and be there every step of the way from day 1 to day 100. I am very grateful to help show the world the physical and mental toughness James has inside him as he defies logic!

Haydn Thompson

Haydn earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from Weber State University in 2005. His career then began as a clinician ATC and Medical Coverage Coordinator for Mountain Land Physical Therapy. In 2009, Haydn built and co-owned MuscleWorks Sports and Injury Therapy Center in Highland, Utah. There a specialized soft-tissue technique was created and delivered among athletes and local active community for the overall care of various sports injuries and enhancing sports performance and recovery. Along with the success, and unique therapies provided at MuscleWorks, brought the opportunity in 2013 to relocate and open the TB12 Sports Therapy Center in Foxboro, Massachusetts.

Currently, and over the course of the past 12 years, Haydn has also owned HT Sports practicing as an independent Certified Athletic Trainer. He is consistently contracted by individual NFL athletes and teams for his soft tissue therapy or “bodywork” plus integrative holistic methods in nutrition, strength & conditioning, injury prevention and performance recovery techniques. Haydn also serves as the Director of Neuromuscular Therapy at Cognitive FX in Provo, Utah where they specialize in post-concussion treatment.

In 2012, through MuscleWorks, Haydn met James to resolve a chronic hip injury. From there they continued a maintenance regimen focusing on both injury treatment as well as consistent preventative and recovery techniques to enhance his performance. This will be the continued focus throughout James upcoming 100/100 challenge. Haydn chose this role due to continually experiencing James challenge the human body’s limits over the years. He is inspired by James story, commitment, motivation, multiple sacrifices and knows how deserving James and his family are of this goal. He is excited and grateful to be an integral part of the TEAM and be involved in providing the best care, both physically and mentally for James to complete this extreme endurance project.

Haydn enjoys wakeboarding, snowboarding, all sports and anything outdoors. He has been married to his very patient wife Lindsay for 20 years and is trying to hold his own among their three girls Zoie, Bonnie, and Izzy. The girls are avid swimmers, dancers, and love to travel (often with Dad on work trips).

Ashley Grimmel

Ashley Grimmel is the founder of Grimmel Biometrics, an Aspen based nutrition and biometric consulting firm. Ashley met James through his use of Biostrap for this project. Over her career Ashley has worked extensively with elite athletes including Olympians, UFC champions, Pro Golfers, and NFL players.  As an ultra endurance athlete and boundary pusher herself and the opportunity to work with James on this project was a dream come true. Ashley wholeheartedly lives out the lifestyle she prescribes to her clients. Personally, she has lost 60 lbs, reversed autoimmune disease, and has gone from hardly being able to walk a mile to holding multiple podium finishes in the obstacle course racing community. She is an avid ourdoorswomen, climber, skier, hiker, trail dancer, and dog mom. Her passion is life and anything that helps to live it optimally.

Felisha Hurst

Hi, my name is Felisha Hurst. Jayson and I have been married for 18 years and we have 5 kids, 3 girls and 2 boys, age range from 16-8. I have been a Licensed Massage Therapist for 16 years and work part time between family and fitness. I have been teaching Group X Fitness classes for the past 5 years and I absolutely love it. I met James in 2006 his office was in the same building as my Massage Office. At the time he just started getting into races and Triathlons, we connected, and he scheduled an appointment for a massage. I believe when he first walked in and saw my size, I think he said “this won’t be a deep tissue massage” or something to that effect. I have a small frame but never underestimate the power of my hands, they are strong. James introduced me to Sunny, his wife, and I’d like to say we had a lot in common and became close friends. I am one of the Fitness Trainers on the Chakara App and I specialize in working out at home with minimal workout equipment. I am so excited to be a part of this journey, I love everything that James and Sunny stand for, the consistency, dedication, commitment, the love of helping others and sharing your gifts and talents. I want to share the real rawness of motherhood, create positivity along the way, and really show and help others find a way to move their bodies and not feel like it’s a punishment but a gift.

Carlee Tullet

Carlee Tulett is an elite amateur triathlete and experienced endurance athlete in a wide range of running, cycling, and triathlon events. Starting in high school, Carlee found success in both soccer and track and field and eventually went on to compete as a 100 and 200 meter runner at Western Washington University.

After competing in various local running and triathlon events, Carlee registered for her first 70.3 in 2011 and sought coaching assistance from James Lawrence and Team Ironcowboy where she went on to qualify for the 70.3 world championships later that same year. In addition to winning and placing in various local events, Carlee snagged 3rd female in her first full distance at the Lake Havasu HIITS triathlon series. Subsequently, she joined Team Ironcowboy as a coach in 2015, completed the Ironman University Training certification, and has gone on to coach many athletes to race successfully in events ranging from 100 mile ultra trail runs to the Ironman World Championships in Kona.

While staying home and raising her five little boys ranging from age four to 14, Carlee has managed to complete (and typically podium in) over 20 70.3 events, 5 full Ironman events, and a variety of endurance road, trail, and cycling events.

Recently, Carlee placed 2nd female in the ICON Livigno xtreme triathlon which qualified her for the Norseman xtreme triathlon in 2021. Carlee brings to the Team Ironcowboy coaching staff her expertise in open water swim technique, mental toughness training, extreme endurance events, and balancing work and motherhood responsibilities with endurance training.

KEVIN LONGORIA

Biostrap Chief Scientist

Kevin is the Chief Science Officer (CSO) for Biostrap and an expert in the field of Clinical Physiology with an emphasis in human performance optimization- within and beyond the realm of athletics. Kevin met James through a mutual friend and immediately became intrigued with James’ ability to defy all logic of human physical and mental potential described in the scientific literature. Kevin is proud to lead the Conquer 100 Health Monitoring Team alongside a world-class group of healthcare professionals, genuinely believing that this project represents the greatest athletic feat and Sports Medicine research opportunity of all time. The Health Monitoring Team will be reviewing continuous biometric data related to James’ sleep, recovery, and cardiovascular health, weekly blood labs, and comprehensive clinical testing performed before and immediately following the Conquer 100, with the primary goal of optimizing safety and ensuring successful completion.
Kevin is currently the Principal Physiologist for various competitive athletes including an Olympic Gold Medalist and multi-division UFC World Champion. But of all his accomplishments, Kevin prides himself most on being a dedicated husband and father to his newborn son, Logan.

Dallas Makin

D.C., F.A.S.A.

Dr Dallas Makin is a sports chiropractor who specializes in using an array of chiropractic, nutrition, acupuncture and physiotherapy techniques to identify and treat imbalances and weaknesses in an athlete’s body… getting them back into the game faster and keeping them there.

He is the founder of Utah Spine and Sport, as well as Natural Athlete Nutrition (a daily-vitamin supplement line directed specifically towards athletes who want top-notch, all-natural nutrition).

Dr. Makin first met James Lawrence in January of 2013. After James broke the single-year, full-Ironman distance world record in 2012 he was physically a disaster and needed major work. He went into Dr. Makin’s office with crippling elbow pain that no other doctors could fix and within a few short visits he saw such dramatic results that he knew he had found an irreplaceable part of his team. Dr Makin became his “healer”… and has been the official sports chiropractor and key medical advisor for James ever since.

He helped James prepare for the 50.50.50 project in 2015, traveled along with him on the weekends during the 50 (while still maintaining his private practice during the week), and has since played a major role in helping James effectively recover from the toll the 50 took on his body.

Dr. Makin’s job will be to “keep James put-together” structurally throughout the 100 days. As you can imagine, a feat like this will put insurmountable stress on his body, which will result in unpredictable aches, pains, tweaks and strains on his musculoskeletal system. Dr. Makin has a unique skill of quickly identifying these ailments as they’re forming and strategically applying specific therapies to stop them in their tracks and keep James moving strong.

Dr. Makin feels honored to have been part of James’ journey thus far and can’t wait to see James push his body to the brink once again during the 100. Not only has he been James’ medical stalwart since 2013 but he has also become his very close friend and Dr Makin knows that if there is anyone who could possibly do this… it’s James… and he wants to be there to help him do it, knowing it’s going to push his body in unimaginable ways and won’t be able to do it on his own.
